Okay, so, you just had your first kid. Congratulations! It’s time for late nights, diaper changes and a bit of restructuring when it comes to getting a quality game session in. The latter is where I can help.
Handhelds
Thankfully, for parents, there are ways to game besides the usual PC or game console that require some sort of large screen. For instance, you can grab yourself a Steam Deck. Valve’s super-powerful handheld can have you playing AAA titles in no time flat. Or, grab a Nintendo Switch! A little less powerful, but still has a library of games that is pretty much unmatched. Both of these devices come with a sleep feature that allows a busy parent to stop/resume their gaming at the drop of a hat. Totally clutch.
Naps
Newborns love to nap. Sometimes it can get wild trying to get them to sleep, but when they are zonked, you usually have about 1.5 to 2 hours to game out on your console of choice. Maybe work something out with your SO on how you want to handle it. The baby sleeps on them while you steal away for an hour or so. This has worked for me.
My personal advice is drop whatever game you maybe playing to assist with the crying baby if necessary. This will keep everyone in the household happy.
Friends & Family Time
Oh, would you look at that! Your mother-in-law just popped by to say hello to the little one. If everyone is happy, THIS is your time to jump on the system for a few rounds of “Overwatch.” The new baby will keep everyone’s attention so hard, it’s likely no one will notice your absence.
Of course, if you hear the baby fussing or if for any reason someone is missing you, remember my advice and rejoin the fun times.
So that pretty much sums up my new parent gaming advice, if I’m missing any other tips, let me know in the comments. Again, congrats on the bundle of joy.
The original Playstation console has so many great games on it. Sooooo many worth playing. But guess what, make way for the GOAT, which is “Parasite Eve.” This thing needs a remake or knockoff stat.
Forget Final Fantasy 7
If you’ve played “Final Fantasy 7,” you’d notice how similar “Parasite Eve” looks graphically in comparison. That’s a good thing, the graphics in “FF7” are totally unique and charming. Even as I play “PE” on my Steam Deck I can’t help but get sucked into its particular beauty. I can’t believe “PE” came out in 1998.
Anyway, “FF7” got a recent remake and it’s time for “PE” to get the same treatment. Yes and thanks.
Combat
So unlike many of the traditional RPGs out there, “PE” has a less repetitive combat system. The player can move the main character, Aya, around the combat zone while initiating attacks. The departure form the usual static RPG battles is such a welcome one, I’ll tell ya. Variety, variety, variety.
Also, I just love how Aya handles the weapons, which are primarily guns, in the game. All the guns appear to be modeled after the real thing. The icons for each one are very cool looking in game too. Guns in an RPG are just something you don’t see, making the gave even more one of a kind.
So, yeah, this game needs to be remade. Anyone up for it?
I finally got my Steam Deck. Waiting close to a year for my preorder to process and deliver was a major test of patience. Alas, the wait is over, this thing totally owns.
Emulation
I wasn’t sure about the Steam Deck emulation despite hearing plenty of positive chatter. Glad I took the plunge because there is so much good stuff here and–wow– it’s so simple.
All you have to do is download Emudeck here. Literally will hand hold you into pure success. Check it out.
If you haven’t played Parasite Eve on the PS1, I strongly suggest you give it a go.
Half-Life
You can play the Half-Life series on this thing. That alone is worth the price of admission. Even while I’m writing this I’m thinking about jumping into HL2 haha.
Configuration
For people who love messing with settings, like me, the Steam Deck offers plenty. Frames per second and Hz can easily be adjusted using sliders while the system is in game mode. Lots more video options can be accessed when the Steam Deck is in desktop mode. Any changes to the settings are noticed and appreciated in the gameplay. So so satisfying.
Conclusion
Go reserve one of these bad boys if you haven’t already. I can’t do anything but sing its praises. LNG approved for sure.
Sometimes you just have to accept fact you aren’t going to put an end to old (and downright fun) habits. “Overwatch” is that old habit for me… And I’m not mad at it!
Battle royales like “Apex Legends,” “Fortnite” and “Warzone” have run their course. Too sweaty and honestly boring af. Plus, free-to-play games such as those are just low effort and skin money-grabs. Time to move on from those titles.
In the end it’s always back to “Overwatch,” a game that runs really well, looks great and offers a formidable challenge. Game wasn’t created to generate boat loads of money off skins. Sure, there are loot boxes, but whatever. Blizzard truly cared about the player having fun when they made “Overwatch” instead of separating the player from their wallet. Hard to say that about other Blizz games, however.
6v6 action at it’s best! Can’t recall another game that feels as balanced as this gem.
A warm/delicious soup stirs the same emotions as playing “Overwatch.” Timeless game that I will be returning to over and over again. There’s nothing quite like it. So I’ve accepted it! I’ll be the one sucking down coffee and playing as Mercy. AND likely stuck in bronze.
It’s like this, you get pretty good at “Apex Legends.” Then, skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) kicks in and you get paired up with sweaty players. The sweat swarm is a total burn. So, is it time to start smurfing?
Like most current multiplayer games, “Apex Legends” has a matchmaking problem. Slowly and eventually, players will start going up against players who eat, sleep and breathe “Apex Legends.” This means you, I and everyone is gunna get smoked. The tears flow once SBMM kicks in.
So what is smurfing? According to the boys over at gaming4.cash (lol) smurfing is defined as “an experienced gamer who poses as a newbie by creating a new account under an alternate name. The purpose behind this is to play against less skilled players with the ultimate result being bringing humiliation to the less skilled players.” Not a bad assessment and could be true most of the time, but it doesn’t account for the game forcing the player’s hand to smurf due to SBMM.
Smurfing is the only option to keep me going in “Apex.” I’m not trying to troll the noobs or anything, I’m just trying to get matched up with players who aren’t going to steamroll me in a moment flat. Fair fight pleaseeeee.
Picross isn’t that household name like “Mario Kart” or “Zelda,” but Picross deserves it’s place!
With a new Picross release right around the corner, this one focusing on Sega icons, I feel compelled to sing my praises of the artistic genre. There’s nothing quite like it. A mix of math and logic with a twist of addictive gaming flair (whatever that means). Hours literally feel like minutes playing this ish.
There’s academic praise I could give these games as well. I feel like Einstein after completing a tricky puzzle. Scientists need to do some studies on these games and the positive impact they have one minds.
Anyway, go play one on your Switch or iPhone or something lolz.
First time playing “Mass Effect” over here–gotta say–totally epic stuff. “Mass Effect Legendary Edition” came out recently for all the laggards to play on current gen consoles. Worrrrth, here’s why.
Gameplay
The combat in “Mass Effect” take a bit to click, but once it does–it’s game over! I found myself really focusing in on how to utilize my array of abilities and weapons to effectively eliminate any alien/robotic/human foe that stood in my way. Upgrades and new loot keep the combat fresh even 30 hours into the planet-hopping adventure. Speaking of loot, I do wish the inventory was easier to manage. It fills up quick and it’s kind of a pain to winnow things you no longer need.
Having two other companions with you all the times made me apprehensive at first, but they turn out to be a lethal/smart duo who only help you along the way. You can easily instruct them fire off their abilities or change their weapons. Plus, they are nice to have around when you find yourself trudging through a sinister-looking tunnel on some unknown world.
Story
Do you like sci-fi books like I do? “Mass Effect” has all the epic qualities of an award-winning book. If you want to engross yourself in the details of the world, you can. The in-game codex provides all the fine details adding to the incredible story. Stellar dialogue drives the story along as well. It’s like sitting around a campfire hearing a cool story or something.
The story is about as grand as it could get. Taking the player across the galaxy to fight evil alien races. There’s no shortage of adrenaline-filled moments where the player feels the weight of the human race on their shoulders. High stakes baby!
No matter how you crack it, check out “Mass Effect.” Gosh darn sweet stuff.
Putting time into “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” has been a pure joy. It’s how remakes should be. Here’s why.
Graphics
The most-noticeable takeaways from “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” are the graphics. They’re stunning as heck. Walking around, taking in the sights makes for a good time. The character animations are hard to not admire as well. Not many games make you stop to take it all in.
The urge to take screenshots happens often. That’s saying something right there.
Gameplay
The departure from the classic turn-based combat made me a touch nervous, but holllllly the real-time battle system in the remake is money in the bank. For instance, gracefully launching Cloud into battle for hack-and-slash mayhem feels natural. Nothing about it is forced.
During the ability and spell casting moments, time slows down to allow the player to make selections with ease. This adds to the already addictive combat and throws in a touch of turn-based formula for fans of the original game.
Charm
“Final Fantasy 7 Remake” does not skimp on the epic strangeness brought to you by the original “FF7.” Although slightly altered, the infamous cross-dressing mission mades its way into the remake version. This proves the game didn’t get watered down and only improves upon the original “FF7” which can at times feel like a fever dream.
Another thing that made me nervous going into the remake was how the characters would act, but they all stay very true to their original selves. They are even more lovable, if you can believe it.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake should be in the hands of gamers everywhere at any price point. I can’t sing the praises of this game enough. Do yourself a favor and play!
